Two air traffic controllers who thrive on living dangerously compete to outdo each other on several levels. The world of intense air traffic control serves as both a dramatic and comedic backdrop in Pushing Tin. John Cusack plays Nick Falzone, an air traffic controller at the Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) in New York, where he negotiates air traffic and landing patterns for the Kennedy and Newark airports. It's a high-stakes, high-pressure job that demands a lot, and Nick is very good at it – and he knows it. So when a new controller, Russell Bell (played by Billy Bob Thornton), moves to TRACON from the Southwest looking for an even bigger thrill, it's the opposite of Nick's laid-back personality. Russell is a daredevil with a model airplane collection that he claims to have stood in front of just to see how it feels. Soon, the job becomes a constant competition between Russell and Nick, and their competitive nature doesn't stop when the workday ends. However, the competition takes a turn when Nick notices the beautiful and elusive wife of Russell, Mary (played by Angelina Jolie), while Nick's own wife, Connie (Cate Blanchett), finds herself more interested in Russell than Pushing Tin. Written by Glenn Charles and Les Charles, who had previously been warned about their television work in series such as M*A*S*H, Cheers, and Taxi and directed by an English filmmaker, they also delved into the small side of New York City. In the end, the film explores the thrilling and dangerous world of air traffic control while also delving into the personal lives and relationships of the characters, making Pushing Tin a compelling and entertaining watch.
